He knew it yesterday, but today it's gone!

A Mom on a Facebook  group today asked, "Why it is so hard for her child to learn!?" She was so frustrated that her child seemed to know something one day, yet the very next day, the information was "gone!"  She thought that maybe she was doing something wrong (and that's a very common question that confronts parents of a struggling learner). What I answered her was that her child's difficulties were very consistent with a language-based learning disability. I explained that the inability to retain information can be one characteristic of issues that fit under that large umbrella diagnosis. Yes, it is frustrating for parents and the inconsistency of what you observe is "maddening!" The important thing of several important things to know is that it is seldom that they are being disobedient or goofing off. No kid chooses to look dumb or tries hard to get in trouble - so examine his/her behaviors in other areas of life to see if there are indicators of things they do not seem to be catching when you speak to them, give multiple step directions, or seem to forget what you said to do as soon as they walk away! I encouraged her to check out the chapter in my new book! These problems are so common these days that I devoted an entire chapter to it! Check https://www.facebook.com/JudithMunday.SpecialNeeds
